San Francisco: 21-24 July 2009

Background to San Francisco

What do you do with only three days in San Francisco?... a lot of walking and people watching.

With the few short days we had, we toured downtown and Chinatown, saw City Lights bookstore, Telegraph Hill, Fishermans Wharf and walked up and down many of the steep hills of San Francisco. In the evening we danced at El Valenciano, a lovely tango restaurant in a rather rough part of town.

A highlight for us had to be the Avedon exhibit at the SFMoMA, and afterwards... an all too brief visit to GoldenGate park.

The city is smaller than I expected, and cooler. An offshore breeze kept it in the low 60's. As Mark Twain was supposed to have said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." An interesting melting pot of cultures and history, and where taxi drivers are just as crazy as anywhere else. Ian Watson July 2009
