Spain - April 2012: Background

Background on our trip to Mallorca and Barcelona, Spain

During the past winter, we received an invitation from my great-uncle Tom Walker of Scotland, asking if we might like to join him and his friend Nan at his holiday condo in Mallorca, Spain. In a matter of days we had decided to accept, and enthusiastically began making plans for a visit to Spain sometime in April.

Tom has had a condo on Mallorca for the past 40 years, and knew the island well. It would be a chance to visit with him again after a five year absence, and to get to know a part of Europe that we had never been to before.

The trip turned out to be a great adventure, if a bit exhausting, but well worth every minute. We saw some marvelous sights in Mallorca, but also included a few days in Barcelona to explore some of Gaudi's more famous works.

It must be said that no amount of preplanning prepared us for what we were to discover in that great Catalan city, the works of Gaudi must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Even after a hundred years, nothing today comes close to matching the architectural wonder of this much admired, inventive and creative mind.

Thanks again to Tom and Nan, for your kind hospitality and a wonderful visit. June 2012
